I’m the shadow-cloaked protector,
Sentinel of night, keeping
Monsters at bay so you may
Sleep like I can’t.

I fight your nightmares to think
I am defeating mine – great beasts,
Bears, these nightmares,
Snouts stained red with the blood of my failures:
Those I wished to save but had not the strength.

‘Tis easier to fight for you than face
Claws of shame, fearsome fangs
Dripping reminders of my loss.

Trusted by many, trusting none;
Surrounding myself with friends,
Ultimately alone.
You may rely on me, for my mission
Is all-consuming.

I am paranoia,
The dark night.
